Ten Tors 2016 - Success!
On Saturday 7th May six students from Bedminster Down School took part in the annual Ten Tors Expedition across Dartmoor. Those six students were Marcus Hartrey (Team Leader), Hannah Fritsch (Navigator), Rhys Price, Joe Matthews, Jimmy Sellick & Will Hunt. Facing them at the start line at 0700hrs on a surprisingly dry morning was the prospect of walking in excess of 35 miles across the rugged & very unforgiving terrain of Dartmoor in less than 36hrs.
In order to achieve this aim they needed to carry large rucksacks weighing about a third of their own body weight, containing everything that they would need to survive & sustain themselves on their trek. Months of training had led up to this point during which these six students had proven themselves to show the necessary resilience, grit, determination & courage in the face of some very inhospitable conditions on Dartmoor. All of which were necessary to manage the task now ahead of them – completely unaided by any adult support.
Their training & commitment paid off as on Sunday morning at the incredible time of 1135hrs the team crossed the finish line – weary but in great spirits – to be met by some very proud parents, family members & school staff.
To have completed the walk is a massive achievement, to come in as a complete team with no one dropping out absolutely amazing & to complete it all with over 5 hours to spare was absolutely brilliant.
Well done to the team & thank you to all of the staff that have supported the training.
Now to start thinking about our entry into the 45 mile category next year …
