Challenge 24 – Year 9 Outdoor Education Project

On Thursday 21st September the new Year 9 Outdoor Education project ‘Challenge 24’ got underway on Dartmoor. The project challenges groups of Year 9 pupils to experience 24hrs of hiking & wild camping on the remote Dartmoor moorland. Throughout the period the group are completely self-sufficient carrying all that they need in rucksacks on their backs.

12 pupils together with Ms Maunder & Mr Priday (Outdoor Education Lead) &’Ted’ the Terrier set off from Princetown at lunchtime on Thursday on an adventure which for many of the pupils was a unique experience & one that they will remember for many years. Our journeying took us beyond Nuns Cross Farm South East towards Fox Tor (the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes novel – ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’) where it was decided that we would set up camp for the evening. Following a demonstration on how to cook their evening meal the pupils settled down to a well-earned pasta meal before getting into their tents for the evening but not before marvelling at the amazing canopy of stars visible due to the absence of any artificial light. The following morning all were awake early to discover we had been visited during the night by some uninvited guests. Fox Tor had lived up to its name & several breakfasts and a pair of socks had been snaffled overnight. After collapsing tents & pooling our remaining breakfast meals to share between the group we left the Tor as we found it to make our way back to Princetown having had an exciting and interesting start to our new project.
